What is Payeeship?

The Payeeship program is designed to help adults with mental illness receiving social security benefits in paying their bills, meeting basic living needs and all personal financial obligations.

Payeeship at SafeHaven is responsible money management designed for the mental health consumers who find it difficult to manage their social security benefits checks. If you qualify and enroll for payeeship, Ms.Stevens will receive your social security disability disability checks directly and she will ensure that basic needs, such as rent, utilities, food and clothing are paid for before allowing the client to spend money on other items.

Getting Started
The process of having SafeHaven become your payee is dependent upon many factors. Some are as follows:

  • Whether Social Security feels your are in need of a payee (they need a written statement from a medical professional, case manager, etc. specifying that you are in need of payeeship services)
  • Whether you currently have a payee or not (if you currently have a payee, the process is simpler as they already have the needed written proof)
  • The type of Social Security benefits you are currently receiving (some types of Social Security benefits take longer to switch over)

Eligibility

Eligibility is limited to mental health consumers over the age of 18 who are currently receiving Social Security benefits and benefits and needs assistance in managing day-to-day living (i.e. expense and lifestyle)

Purpose of Payeeship
  • Stability of income, and assurance that rent, food and other necessary expenses will be paid regularly
  • Improved credit, money management skills and self-confidence
  • Providing savings for larger, special purchases
  • Ensures that client's financial entitlements do not lapse, and that money is spent appropriately
  • Increased chance of achieving future life goals, such as sustained independent living

SafeHaven's payeeship/money management program also helps protect mental health consumers from financial exploitation and abuse. It also prevents them from generating expenses associated with delinquent bills and duplication of services.
